Making sure that your computer is free of viruses and other malware is a basic step to protecting your data and privacy. Before you worry about encrypting your communications, browsing and data, you should ensure the safety of your entire operating system and hardware. The table below gives an overview of some of the threats linked to viruses and malware and proposes preliminary steps to address them in order to get complete protection.

The antivirus and anti-malware software programs suggested below (Avast and Spybot) are free and have been vetted by international digital security experts. There are, however, other paid options that are equally reliable.

Type of malicious software
Protection methods
Virus  (Viruses include: worms, macroviruses, trojans and backdoors)
What does it do? Destroys, damages and infects, data, files, hard drive and external drives.
How does it spread? Internet, email attachments, malicious websites, USB keys.
Use an antivirus at all times (free or paid)Avast is a highly reputable free antivirus software for both PCs and Macs, and it automatically updates when connected to the internet.
Note: do not install more than one antivirus at a time as it will slow down your computer and stop the antiviruses from working efficiently.
What does it do? While spyware does not destroy information or files, it runs on your computer without your knowledge and spies on every move you make with your mouse, as well as websites you visit and information you type. This information can then be communicated to someone else.
How does it spread? Internet, email, malicious websites, USB keys.
Spybot is a free program that protects from spyware and malware (i.e. trojans and worms). It works for PCs only.
Note: using Spybot with an antivirus simultaneously allows complete protection for PCs since in PCs an antivirus alone does not catch spyware and malware (trojans and worms).
What does it do? Can destroy information or spy on you.
How does it spread? Some websites can trick you into installing malicious software or can automatically download malware.
What does it do? Destroys files and information.
Note: Both trojans and worms are usually running in your computer without your knowledge or consent.
